iOS (iPhone)

Tips and troubleshooting

NFC reader: My scanner is not showing up when I want to Tap In

This is a rare issue when an NFC session remains open in the background, that can be fixed with a hard reboot. On most modern iPhones (8, X, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, etc.), you force‑restart like this:

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  2. Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the Side (power) button.
  4. Keep holding until you see the Apple logo, then release.

After the reset, your NFC scanner should work again.

Automatic timer: The app timer does not automatically tap me out again

In some cases, older iOS17 an iOS18 versions do not respond to the 'Take a Break' feature. To fix this, please update your iPhone to the latest public iOS version.

This should solve the issue!

App blocking: None of my apps are being blocked or allowed as expected

Option 1: Check if you have enabled screentime access for Tap Out.

  • Go to Settings > Screentime > toggle Tap Out to ON.

Option 2: Check if you have screentime limits enabled for the apps that are not being blocked/allowed as expected.

Unfortunately, screentime limits can interfere with Tap Out.

  • Go to Settings > Screentime > App Limits and disable them. It may be the case you need to disable these on other devices too.
  • If you have disabled the limits, but the apps are still not behaving as expected, reinstall Tap Out and restart your device

Option 3:. Check if you have other screentime apps (like Forest or OneSec) that limit or block your app usage. This can unfortunately interfere with Tap Out. If you have them, disable these. If the apps are still not behaving as expected, close and open Tap Out and restart your device if needed.

Option 4: Reinstall the Tap Out app and/or reboot your device
This has solved the issue on multiple occasions

App blocking: Some of my apps are not being blocked or allowed as expected

1. Check if you have selected more than 49 items in your mode in the Tap Out app (unfortunately a limit set by Apple).

Reduce your selected number to <49, and your Tap Out should work as you expect!

2. Check if you have screentime limits enabled for the apps that are not being blocked/allowed as expected.

3. Check if you have other screentime apps (like Forest or OneSec) that limit or block your app usage. This can unfortunately interfere with Tap Out. If you have them, disable these. If the apps are still not behaving as expected, close and open Tap Out and restart your device if needed.

Apple Shortcuts: I want to set up an automation to Tap Out automatically

How can I use Apple shortcuts with Tap Out?
You can set up shortcuts to automatically Tap Out under certain conditions. For example, you can Tap Out automatically when you:

  • Arrive at or leave a certain location (like work)
  • Enter a specific focus mode (like bedtime)
  • Plug in your charger

Important: be careful setting up these shortcuts, as you will always need your Tap Out to use your apps again

How to set up shortcuts

  1. Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone
  2. Go to the Automation tab and press + in the upper right corner
  3. Select your trigger (for example: when I arrive at home, Anytime, Run immediately)
  4. Press Next, press New Blank Automation, and search for and select 'Tap Out automatically'.
  5. Press Done. Your automation is now saved and active

Apple Shortcuts: I want to make Tap Out foolproof and disable opening settings

How do I prevent accessing my apps by switching off screentime access?
You can set up a Shortcuts automation to prevent opening settings and switching off your screentime

How to set up the shortcut to disable opening settings when you are Tapped Out

  1. Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone
  2. Go to the Automation tab and press + in the upper right corner
  3. Search for and press 'App'
  4. Choose 'Settings' as app, and select 'Is Opened', and 'Run Immediately'. Press Next.
  5. Press New Blank Automation, and search for and select 'Check if I am Tapped Out'. (Your screen now says: 'When "Settings" is opened, 'Am I tapped Out?')
  6. Search for, and add the Action 'If'. Delete the 'Otherwise' that appears.
  7. Search for and press the Action 'Open app'. Press it to select the app that should open when you open settings. Search for and choose Tap Out.
  8. Drag the block with 'End if' to the bottom of the four blocks. Press done.
  9. Test if the automation works by making sure you are tapped out and opening the Settings app. It should automatically switch back to Tap Out withing 1 second.

Android

Tips and troubleshooting

Automatic timer: The app timer does not automatically block my apps again

The timer functionality requires that you have enabled notifications for Tap Out. You can allow notifications through settings: Go to Settings > Apps > Tap Out > Notifications: Allowed.

Now, when you Tap In for a given amount of time, you should see the timer counting down in your notifications section of your phone.

NFC reader: My phone does not read the Tap Out Point

  1. Find the NFC reader on your phone.
The NFC scanner can be in different places depending on your phone model. Try moving the Tap Out slowly across the back of your phone until it connects.
  2. Check if NFC is enabled:
Go to Settings > Connections > NFC and contactless payments and make sure NFC is switched on. Some phones also have an extra toggle that only allows NFC for payments/wallets – make sure that’s turned on as well.
  3. Test your Tap Out: Do you have another phone available? Try scanning the Tap Out there. If it works, the issue is likely with your phone’s NFC settings. Or try scanning another NFC tag (e.g., from a fitness tracker) to confirm if your phone can read NFC tags in general.

If the above does not resolve the issue, please contact us through Whatsapp.

Website blocking: I can't find website blocking

We are currently developing website blocking for Android. Currently, you can block all your apps from your phone, but access through websites is not blocked.
